For Aaron’s birthday, Hayden’s parents took us out to True Food Kitchen in El Segundo, CA. It’s a new restaurant at this location, but the chain of restaurants opened in 2008 in Arizona and have locations in quite a few states with plans to continue expanding. Great news for us, so we can eat here on our travels!

We started off with the kale guacamole with pink grapefruit, cilantro, roasted poblanos, sunflower seeds & pita chips, as well as herb hummus (without the feta cheese) with grilled pita bread. Both were really flavorful and great starters. The chips that came with the guacamole, were some of the better house chips we’ve had and could have easily turned that into a full meal.

Next up were the roasted Brussel sprouts with jerusalem artichoke, sultana, shallots, & toasted hazelnuts. These were so good and quickly devoured. They had a great flavor to them and were a great starter plate.

We decided to split the teriyaki quinoa bowl with broccoli, heirloom carrot, bok choy, mushroom, brown rice, avocado, & toasted sesame. We also split the butternut squash pizza with smoked onion, organic kale, almond ricotta, & dried cranberry. Aaron is a relatively picky eater, so pizzas that experiment with flavors don’t tend to rate too well with him. That being said, he thinks this is the best “non-traditional” style pizza he’s ever had so you know that has to count for something! The teriyaki quinoa bowl was good, but in comparison to the rest of the meal, was probably our least favorite dish.

We rounded the meal off with their apple goji crisp with almond crumble and vanilla ice cream for dessert and it was a great decision. It had a nice level of sweetness that made it dessert-like, but didn’t feel too heavy to eat after a full meal.

Overall, we would try this again and will keep an eye out for other locations as we travel along.
