Maru, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Maru in Grand Rapids, Michigan was suggested to us by our friend Kate and we were all too happy to oblige. We love vegan sushi so anytime something comes highly recommended we make it a point to go check it out.  Grand Rapids was about an hour away from where we were staying and we are glad we ended up getting out there.

What we ordered

Fried Tofu- choice of sweet or spicy tofu with toasted sesame seeds. We had to switch to the garlic eel sauce as the teriyaki sauce had oyster sauce in it and was not vegan.  Even though eel sauce doesn’t sound vegan, it is named that because they put it on their eel dishes.  Kind of gross, but at least it was vegan!  Thanks to our server Miranda for finding out this information for us!  The fried tofu dish was really good and the sesame seeds gave it a great flavor.

Yaki Udon- stir fried udon noodles, zucchini, broccoli, carrot, onion, mushroom and seasonal vegetables served with miso soup. The tofu was less fried than our fried tofu appetizer but it was still good.  We probably would have rather eaten a second order of the fried tofu, but it was still good.  It is completely packed to the brim with veggies and is somewhat hearty.

Boogie Veggie Roll- radish sprouts, cucumber, avocado, asparagus, kampyo, topped with tempura fried sweet potato and maru dressing. The sweet potato crisps had little flavor, but the sauce that went with it was good and carried the dish to new levels.  The roll itself didn’t have a ton of flavor either, but the sweet potato crisps on the roll itself gave it a nice sweet flavor and crisp. Once you douse it with soy sauce, garlic, and wasabi, it all tastes the same in the end!

Super Mario- marinated shiitake mushroom, radish sprouts, avocado, cucumber, asparagus, red pepper, tempura crunch, served with crimini mushroom, pickled radish and a chef’s salad on the plate. Holy smokes this thing was huge and was easily a meal in and of itself.  It was absolutely incredible and we would order this again in a heartbeat.  The salad was a nice touch to the dish.
