We originally weren’t planning on going out to eat, but after finishing up the backsplash on the RV, neither one of us really felt like cooking. We popped open Happy Cow looking for pizza, but ended up choosing Red Mesa Grill in Traverse City, Michigan. It bills itself as Latin American style cuisine and touts its vegan, vegetarian, and celiac sensitive menus so we figured we had a winner.
Looking at the vegan menu, we were excited! Everything was bean based, covered in a multitude of sauces, topped with a corn salsa, and came with a side of steamed vegetables. Sounds delicious! Unfortunately, things did not come out as advertised and we were basically given just beans in a tortilla. Unfortunately, we ended up leaving unsatisfied with the food. We politely filled out a comment card letting them know that if they veganized their rice, it would take their burritos and enchiladas up to a whole new level.
What we ordered
Two Bean Burrito- Stewed black beans and a smoked pinto salsa rolled into a giant flour tortilla, drenched with tomato chipotle sauce and chili verde sauce. Topped with roasted corn salsa and served with a side of steamed vegetables. Everything about this had Aaron drooling in anticipation, the description alone made it sound like it was going to be an award winning burrito. When it came to the table, however, things quickly seemed to fall apart. Essentially, this was a bean burrito consisting of undercooked pinto and black beans with a side of more undercooked black beans. The sauces on top were decent, but Aaron ended up adding additional hot sauce to bring up the heat level. We also noticed that it was missing the corn salsa and the steamed vegetables.
Black Bean Enchiladas- Stewed black beans, rolled in corn tortillas, topped with tomato chipotle sauce and chili verde sauce, served with a side of steamed vegetables. Again, this sounded like it was going to be absolutely incredible but had the same exact pitfalls that Aaron’s burrito had. Hayden did not get any of the corn salsa that was supposed to be on top and did not get any of the steamed vegetables. We let the waitress know and she did bring us a few sides of steamed vegetables at the end.

Aryanna ordered this but with everything on the side so it was a dry version of what Aaron had to eat with all of the same issues except hers came with the side of corn salsa.
