When attempting to find the best vegan Mexican food in the US, you’ll quickly learn that there is some stiff competition. Every one of these restaurants on the list is well worth the visit, whether you want Tex-Mex, Americanized, or straight-up authentic, you’re going to want to check out this list of best vegan Mexican food in the US.
Panchos Vegan Tacos – Las Vegas, NV
Pancho’s Vegan Tacos is one of the favorites on this list and has been written about it in the past. Pancho’s even made it into the Ultime Vegan Guide to Las Vegas, so you know it’s got to be good. It has a very extensive menu and its worth diving into each section of it, even if you have to make multiple trips! With classics such as tamales, sopes & huaraches, and tostadas, you’ll also find more unique items like the Cuban torta which contains ham, bacon, hot dog, and tofu amongst other condiments. They have 6 different vegan protein options so you can get your fill of carne asada, al pastor, and even nopales as the star of your dish. They also have some of the best mole sauce we’ve found and their fish tacos are to die for. Hit them up on Taco Tuesday and get 4 tacos for under $5.
Tumerico – Tucson, AZ
While it is not 100% vegan (they have both cheese and egg available), Tumerico still reigns high on the list of best vegan Mexican food in the US for one major reason- everything is cooked from scratch. You can really tell the love and effort that goes into each dish like it was cooked by your Abuela (grandmother.) The menu changes regularly so you might find things rotate based on season and demand. If you can get their carne asada plate with crispy jackfruit (pictured above), you’ll find yourself blown away by the textures and flavors that come out of each dish.
Doomie’s Next Mex – Los Angeles, CA
Hailing on the TexMex side, Doomie’s Next Mex, the sister company to Doomie’s Home Cookin’ which can be found on the Best Vegan Buffalo Wings in the US list, stands well on its own merits. They have some of the best beans and rice combinations available in the country. The flavor that they manage to cram into them is out of this world. Feeling a little adventurous? Check out their chimi-wet burrito, which is a deep-fried burrito that has then been smothered in red sauce. Or try a few different a la carte tacos with fillings like chick’n mole, Baja artichoke, carnitas, al pastor, and more!
El Nutri Taco – Portland, OR
Portland, OR has no shortage of fantastic vegan food, but if you’re craving vegan Mexican food, look no further than El Nutri Taco. They are not 100% vegan but they have some of the best overall condiments and ingredients to get your vegan thrill on. Check out Gaby’s Enchiladas stuffed with cheese and soyrizo, or a giant wet burrito to really find out why El Nutri Taco is one of the best places to get vegan Mexican food in the US.
House of Mexica – Reno, NV
When you hear the name House of Mexica, you have to be thinking, that’s got to be a purely Mexican restaurant, but it actually isn’t. They serve burgers, a fantastic chick’n sandwich, mac’n cheese as well as some of your more classic Meican dishes like nachos, tacos, and burritos. Get their al pastor meat as it has a really great pineapple flavor to it. Come for the Mexican food, stay for the chick’n sandwich!
Hussongs – Las Vegas, NV
Anywhere that claims to have invented the margarita is definitely worth checking out and at Hussong’s, the margs are fantastic! Located inside Mandalay Bay Hotel at the Shops, the restaurant is a bit difficult to find, but it is well worth the effort. They have multiple offerings with Gardein chick’n and beef, but you MUST try the fish tacos. They are some of the best in the country and the slaw on top just makes them even better!
Mojo Burrito – Chattanooga, TN
Chattanooga, TN is a hidden hotspot of fantastic vegan food and that couldn’t be more true with Mojo Burrito. They serve some of THE BEST vegan cashew cheese you can get your hands on. With a sweet tagline of “Let us roll one for you”, there’s no reason not to stop in and order a burrito or a plate of cheesy nachos. If you’re feeling extra spicy, add the chili to your dish for an added kick!
El Cantaro – Monterey, CA
With a traditional menu that rivals Pancho’s Vegan Tacos, El Cantaro has plenty of options to satisfy everyone’s desires. Their tortilla soup has the perfect amount of spice and flavor to be a breakout item on its own. Their mega quesadillas definitely live up to their name and come with options such as chicken, steak, or mushroom. They even have Famous Chile en Nogada which you won’t find in any other Mexican restaurant on this list. The mole is delicious but SPICY! Bring your appetite!
Tucson Tamale Co – Tucson, AZ
It’s no surprise that Tucson has two entries on this list, given the amount of Mexican restaurants in the area, but Tucson Tamale Co stands on its own because their tamales are divine. Set in a little hole in the wall restaurant, you’ll find several different vegan options, like blue corn and veggies, or soyrizo tamales. They also sell their products in grocery stores like Sprouts and you can order them online as well! So even if you can’t make it to Tucson, you can still give them a try!
