Viva Vegeria, San Antonio, TX

Viva Vegeria is considered a tex-mex style vegan and gluten-free restaurant, but it is actually REALLY authentic Mexican cooking. The atmosphere is very casual and when you walk in you are greeted with a traditional Mexican altar complete with photos and candles. We had to wait a couple minutes for them to clear a table since they were pretty busy. The neighborhood seemed to be predominantly latino, which is great that the community is supporting this vegan restaurant!

We arrived on a Saturday, where they have a different “brunch” menu than their normal menu. Included in each menu item, was full access to the “brunch bar,” which consisted of charro beans, arroz con leche, savory grits, salad, & pozole. Everything was delicious.

We ordered the Classic Vegan Nachos and Sweet Potato Poblano Flautas. The nachos included homemade tortilla chips, vegan queso, quinoa, veggie taco filling, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, and homemade avocado ranch. Overall, they were good. The tortilla chips were amazing since they were fresh and homemade. If we came here again, I would like to try something else, but they were good overall.

The Sweet Potato Poblano Flautas were delicious, but not very much food. There were 3 flavors; sweet, spicy, and savory and were deep fried and stuff with mashed sweet potatoes, poblano, onions, garlic, tomato and topped with poblano cucumber cream. I couldn’t really tell much of a difference between the 3 flavors, but the poblano cucumber cream was delicious! Could have definitely eaten another plate of these.

We finished our meal with homemade vegan and gluten-free cupcakes, which was the highlight of the day! Aaron got “Two Chocolate” and I got “Coconut Chocolate.” They were both absolutely delicious and we wished we had gotten a couple to go.
