Whyld Ass, Flagstaff, AZ

Whyld Ass comes across as a coffee shop when you first look it up, but it is definitely much more than that with all of the vegan options they offer. One quick look at their menu and we knew we had to stop by. It could be easy to pass up if you’re just driving by as the signage is not very visible from the street level, but if you’re walking by, you can’t miss it.

One of the things we loved most about this place is the way they look at food from the nutrient level. Their juices have a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, powders, and more that you can combine to get a truly unique drink. While there were some pitfalls in some areas of the meal, we feel that the nachos alone are worth going to Whyld Ass.  There are plenty of other options available as well that could be just as good that we didn’t get a chance to try.  If you’re in Flagstaff and are looking for a bite to eat, swing on by and grab the nachos and a juice!

What we ordered

They start you off with spirulina water, which is green, smells a little like grass, but is super delicious and refreshing.

Nacho Momma’s Average Nachos-  Southwest cashew cheese sauce, diced tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, gmo-free corn tortilla chips. We also added jackfruit for an additional cost. If anything deserves the title of best ever, it is these nachos.  From the first bite, we were both blown away.  The flavor in the cheese sauce was mild but the spice was very present.  The turmeric sour cream was an incredible surprise on top of an already flavorful dish. The jackfruit added great texture and substance as well. These are easily our favorite nachos that we’ve ever had!

The True Mac, and cheese- Thick basil cashew cheese sauce, caramelized onions, tossed with macaroni pasta.  Much like our obsession with anything buffalo, if there is mac and cheese on the menu, we just can’t stay away from it!  The caramelized onions added a really nice flavor and texture which was quite a surprise given how picky Aaron is with his staple foods.  The cheese sauce was nice and creamy and the pasta was cooked well.  We can’t really say anything bad about this dish, but it didn’t wow us like the nachos.

The Best Biscuits and Gravy EVER- Orange rosemary biscuit, cracked black & chipotle gravy. Topped with southern cooked kale.  When it comes to breakfast, we definitely have our “go-to” foods. Anywhere we go, if they have biscuits and gravy, vegan breakfast burritos, or vegan omelets, they are going to be at the top of the list.  Since this was labeled as “The Best Biscuits and Gravy EVER,” it was a no-brainer to give them a try.  Unfortunately, the meal did not live up to its name.  The biscuits, while having one of the best textures we’ve come across, just was not our favorite flavor with the orange and the gravy tasted more like a curry than a gravy you would expect for this type of meal.  It’s probably good on its own two feet, but not as a breakfast biscuits and gravy. The best biscuits and gravy we’ve had thus far came from A.N.D. Cafe in Portland, OR

Custom juice- Apple, carrot, beet, spirulina, and wheatgrass powder.  We used to juice regularly when we lived in Portland and had access to several incredible farmers markets so we had an idea of what flavors went well together.  This juice smelled a bit like grass but had a smooth sweet flavor.

They have an awesome looking dessert case with lots of options to try. I wish we could have gotten one of everything.

Banana Bread- We make a lot of this at home when we don’t get through our bananas quickly enough and Hayden makes a KILLER banana bread, but this one had just a slightly different flavor than what we were used to.  Aaron ended up devouring it though without too much issue.

Red Velvet Cupcake- Our wedding cake was red velvet and we tend to lean towards red velvet desserts when there’s no carrot cake or brownie options available and so we quickly snapped this one up.  Neither one of us were really impressed with the flavor of it and ultimately didn’t care for it too much.
