Northwestern Michigan Fair Campground, Traverse City, Michigan

We headed up to Traverse City, MI after staying a month in Indiana to renovate the RV and stayed at the Northwestern Michigan Fair Campground. It didn’t look like much on Google Earth, but it was good enough for us, since we were just excited to be back on the road in our new home!

The campground is located behind the Michigan Fairgrounds and is basically an open field with very limited tree coverage. We were in site #91, which was great because there was an abandoned shed and a field outside our front door. That might sound sketchy, but it was nice not to have a camper right in front of us. We’ll take an abandoned building any day! We were also under one of the few trees, so we also had shade.

There is water and electric at all the perimeter spots but the inner spots are just electric.  There is a bathroom and shower house available on site which helps make up for the lack of sewer hookups, although we didn’t take advantage of them.  Outside of that, there are no additional amenities available at the park.  The other downside is that it’s a good 20 minute drive to the heart of Traverse City so it takes some effort to get to everything.  They also do not allow campfires, which is a bummer, especially since our site had a fire pit that looked like it had been recently used. There must have been a city wide ban at the time we were there.

The big upside to the campground is that it is extremely relaxed and laid back.  We met the hosts at their RV when we checked in and that was the only time we ever saw them, unlike other campgrounds we have stayed at in the past. We really just want to be left alone once we settle in. When we first got there, we had some really interesting neighbors who looked like they lived there full time in their tent, but moved out shortly after we arrived.  Other than that, everyone kept to themselves and would just give us a wave as we drove by.

Next to the campground is a BMX bike course and on Friday night, there was a rally there. It was pretty loud with the bikes and the announcer, but it was a weekend, so it wasn’t a big deal.

If you’re looking for a full fledged RV park with all of the amenities, you won’t be happy here.  However, if you’re wanting a very chill and relaxed environment, this is a great place to set down and relax while you explore the beauty of Traverse City.
