If There’s One Thing Every Vegan Needs, It Is A Tofu Xpress

Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or anything in between, if you eat tofu and haven’t heard of the Tofu Xpress, then strap yourself in because we are about to change your world completely.  Aaron originally picked up one of these miracle workers back before we even started dating on San Juan Island after hemming and hawing about whether or not he should purchase it.  At the time, $40 for a device he’d never used, never heard of, nor had any friends who had used it, he felt like he was taking a bit of a gamble.  In the end, it’s our number one piece of equipment that we own and if we had the refrigerator space, we would own at least two of them.

Anybody who has ever eaten tofu has had to go through the fun of trying to figure out “their way” of pressing tofu.  Almost everyone uses paper towel or even a hand towel, some people press it between two plates, others put a heavy pot with items inside of it, and we’ve even seen photos of people using books.  I guess that’s one way to use War and Peace effectively!

But all that has changed now that we own the Tofu Xpress!  Now, with the Tofu Xpress, once you drain the water from the package, you remove the press plate and spring and place the tofu inside the holder.  Place the press plate back in the holder, reattach the spring and lock it into place.  Within minutes you’ll start to see water squeezing out of the tofu and it will start to compress.

The package says to let it sit in the holder for a half hour, but we’ve found that you get the best results with an hour or more of pressing time.  We tend to just keep one in our fridge at all times so we always have access to pressed tofu.  No joke, we have gotten a piece of tofu to be about a quarter of the original thickness after leaving it in the Tofu Xpress overnight.  The texture changes a bit when you squeeze out that much water and we’ve found that it makes for great fried tofu nuggets but also creates an incredible tofu scramble.

The best part about it is after it squeezes all of the water out, you can remove the spring device and press plate and marinate your tofu right inside there with the lid that it comes with.  We’ve used this to create some amazing tofu dishes that are jam packed with flavor.  Since almost all of the water has been completely removed, it pulls in whatever flavors you put in your marinade all the way through the entire block.

If there’s one kitchen gadget every vegan needs to have in their arsenal, it’s the Tofu Xpress.  We can’t recommend it enough!
