We had been looking forward to Florida for quite some time, mostly for the weather, but we had no idea that we were about to pull into one of our favorite campsites at Fort De Soto County Park in St. Petersburg, Florida. We reserved one of the pull-through sites where we could easily fit two, maybe even 3 of our rigs end to end and still have plenty of room on each side.
We were able to put our kayaks in the water multiple times, however, we tried to do it first thing in the morning when the tide was out, and the water was maybe a foot deep making it nearly impossible to go anywhere. On top of that, there are miles of bike trails to ride and the whole area is a wildlife preserve so there are tons of birds to see. There is also a dog beach that Lulu absolutely loved!
The one downside we experienced was the “no see ums,” which will eat you alive! So much so that we ended up purchasing a new mesh outdoor tent so we could sit outside and enjoy the weather. It has definitely helped cut down the annoyance of their presence and now we have a great outdoor space as well.
It’s only a short 20-minute drive into downtown St. Petersburg, which was super convenient and made it easy for us to get to the grocery store and to the awesome vegan food that this town offers.
If you cut out the no see ums and add in a sewer connection, this campground would be much better, but it was still probably the best place we have stayed at so far.

Campground Notes: Massive pull through spaces but most are back in and some have water access. Part of the park is separated from those who have pets and they are not allowed in the other areas of the park. We had 50 amp service and water, but no sewer connection. We made our reservation 6 months in advance.
