Hayden had been talking about Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas since the early days of us dating as she had previously visited on a cross-country road trip from NYC to LA. Since we had a long drive between Santa Fe, NM and Hot Springs, AR, we knew we had to break it up and decided that we would make a quick stop off in Amarillo for one night. We stayed at the Cadillac Ranch RV Park, pulled in super late at night and left early in the morning, so no real thoughts on the park, other than it is a very short drive to Cadillac Ranch.
Cadillac Ranch is a public art installation in the middle of a Texas field. The 10 different Cadillac automobiles are said to represent the evolution of the line of cars, in particular, the tailfins on the vehicles. Also, apparently the angle that they are buried at is supposed to correspond to the Great Pyramids.
We woke up that morning and ran over to Michael’s to pick up a can of spray paint before heading over to Cadillac Ranch. When we arrived, you can see 10 Cadillacs lined up half buried in the dirt in the middle of the field, nose down and tails straight up in the air. We noticed there were people running between cars, spray painting to their heart’s content and looked like they were having a good time. We started scoping out the best place to leave our mark and to test the wind direction so that we wouldn’t get covered in overspray.
We chose the second to the last car on one end and popped the top off our spray can. Aaron took over spray painting duties and quickly realized that he was painting way too large for the amount of room we had, so he had to taper off towards the end of the words. But in the end, we were able to paint “Vegan Voyagers 2017” in clear view for everyone to see. After taking a few photos of our handiwork and of the surroundings, we left the rest of our spray paint in the pile of cans people had left for others and got back on the road.
If you’re in the Amarillo area, or even just passing through, swing on by the Cadillac Ranch and leave your mark, it’ll make for a great memory and a great photo.
