Off The Griddle- Portland, OR
We used to live in Portland, OR before we started traveling the US full-time in an RV and we’ve been raving about these biscuits and gravy ever since we first tried them. Off the Griddle, formerly A.N.D. Cafe, hands down has the best in the US! They’re made in-house and are perfectly fluffy and light. The gravy is thick, but isn’t super heavy on the mushrooms and instead gives the perfect taste and texture to compliment the biscuits. You don’t even need a knife to cut through these, because they flake apart perfectly. Plus, they come on top of a bed of kale, which makes them healthy right??
The Acre, Albuquerque, NM
The biscuits and gravy from The Acre rival the ones from Off The Griddle in Portland (above). They had a really delicious flaky and light consistency. The gravy was a bit on the thinner side and featured mushrooms more prominently, but there was a lot of it, which thoroughly covered the biscuits with gravy goodness. Absolutely delicious!
Veggie Galaxy- Boston, MA
Brunch at Veggie Galaxy in Boston is not to be missed in general (hello, cream cheese stuffed french toast) but definitely order the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are lightly toasted, which makes them more crispy than the previous biscuits, but still pretty light. The mushroom gravy was very flavorful, but there was definitely not enough of it! Perhaps you could ask for extra gravy, which would help make these less dry. The green onions on top are a nice touch and add more dimension of flavor.
Watercourse Foods- Denver, CO
The consistency of the biscuits is the most important part of the biscuit and gravy combo and Watercourse Foods in Denver nails the biscuit. They’re on the dry side if you eat them on their own, but the gravy smothered on top of them helps create the perfect balance. The gravy itself tastes great, even though it’s a tad too oily, which makes the consistency off and separated. What they lack in pretty plating, they make up in taste. After all, that’s what it’s about right, delicious biscuits and gravy?
Cider Press Cafe- St. Petersburg, FL
Many times the gravy is more of an afterthought than the actual biscuit, but not at Cider Press Cafe in St. Petersburg, FL. These biscuits and gravy feature the main star of the dish- SAUSAGE gravy. The gravy comes piled high on top of two biscuits. It’s smoky and chunky, which pairs perfectly with the fluffy biscuits underneath. We would have been fine just shoveling the gravy into our mouths as is, but the biscuits are the perfect vessel. It also came with a side of tofu scramble, which made this a complete meal!
Hard Times Cafe- Minneapolis, MN
Hard Times Cafe in Minneapolis, MN is known for it’s “gritty ambiance” and punk rock vibes, which translates into their food. These biscuits come LOADED with goodies. The biscuits are absolutely drenched in delicious gravy and topped with veggies. These are almost enough to be an entire meal, as they come on a giant plate. The biscuits themselves were a little on the harder side, but the gravy helps to soften them, which works nicely together.
